Innovations in the field of connection technology – a sonotrode that makes ultrasonic plastic welding machines more compact, adhesive solutions for shaped protective caps, hybrid adhesive.

KLN’s new 90° tool, the Banana Sonotrode, is designed to make ultrasonic plastic welding machines more compact and affordable. The area, which is usually small in production premises, can become smaller. At the same time, the tool shortens the production cycle, as more sonotrodes can be used simultaneously on each welding machine due to the available space. It also reduces the number of work steps. Depending on the type of component, this typically saves 15 to 20 seconds of machine time per production unit. This 90° sonotrode also makes smaller installation spaces available; instead of a length of 280 mm for a straight oscillating structure (generator block + straight sonotrode), a total of 110 mm is enough for the “Banana”. The working surface of the sonotrode, which can be rotated by 90 °, thus allows the creation of a very compact oscillating structure. The sonotrode oscillation frequency for the banana sonotrode is 30 kHz at the interface/work surface. The new sonotrode oscillates on the work surface (such as the rivet surface) 30,000 times per second, which melts the plastic to be treated as part of the ultrasonic riveting and welding process. The amplitude of the working surface reaches about 30 μm. The sonotrode made of titanium material and the oscillator were jointly designed and matched to each other. The hardness of titanium provides a longer tool life compared to an aluminum sonotrode.

To meet the high safety requirements in the workplace, machines often require specially shaped protective covers. They are usually made of clear plastics such as polycarbonate (PC) or polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Generally, PC is a material that is relatively easy to bond. However, if this is glued to the painted metal frame of a CNC milling machine, for example, the appropriate adhesive must adhere firmly and securely to both the plastic and the painted surface and be able to seal any gaps that occur. For this structural adhesive, Ruderer Klebertechnik offers the 2-component polyurethane adhesive Technicoll 9430-1. It can fill gaps, absorb vibration and, thanks to a specific curing time, optimizes production time. But an alternative is Technicoll 8008 diffusion adhesive. Both 1- and 2-component reaction adhesives based on EP (epoxy resin), MMA (methyl methacrylate) and, in some cases, PUR (polyurethane) are suitable for bonding bare metal to duraplast.

book advice

Adhesive bonding is a reliable alternative to other joining methods for many applications and offers the potential for lightweight construction. The book “Bread Technology” helps design engineers and users of adhesives in the concept, design and implementation of bonds.

Rivets are the solution

(Image: Bossard)

Bossard Germany has a huge range of different types of rivets for a wide range of applications and tooling: sealed, multi-purpose, stainless steel or high strength fasteners. Kay Brenning, Business Development Manager, points out that you are not a manufacturer yourself and can therefore give customers security by not offering your own blind rivets or blind rivet nuts. For most truck and trailer designers and manufacturers, the expertise that Bossard engineers make available across a range of engineering services is more important than range. Together with those in charge, they check every step, every connector, product group and tool in production. Existing fasteners are replaced with rivets more often than you might think.

The hybrid adhesive combines the speed and reliability of the 2K adhesive process

(Image: Weicon)

Weicon VA 2407 has developed a colorless and crystal clear two-component cyanoacrylate adhesive for bonding various materials. The adhesive adheres to many different surfaces such as polycarbonate and other plastics, steel, stainless steel, aluminum, ceramics, glass and rubber. The hybrid adhesive is partially based on cyanoacrylate adhesives and combines their speed with the process reliability of two-component structural adhesives. It is versatile, has a high adhesive strength, quickly hardens and is extremely durable. VA 2407 can be sanded and painted in about 25 minutes. It is resistant to weather, many harsh chemicals, shock and vibration. It is resistant to temperatures from -20 °C to +120 °C. Depending on the geometry of the joint, gaps up to 5 mm can be closed with VA 2407. Due to its fast and impact-resistant hardening, it is suitable for bonding, for example, B. plastic and rubber. It can also be used for structural bonding where a colored adhesive might spoil the overall visual impression of the component.
