Walkenried, L 603, between Zorge and Walkenried on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, around 5:00 p.m.

WALKENRIED (as) – A 5-year-old boy was seriously injured in a traffic accident on Tuesday (04.04.23) around 17:00 on state road 603 between the villages of Zorge and Walkenried.

According to the current state of the investigation, the child was together with the 19-year-old driver of a tractor team in the towing vehicle on the L603 coming from Zorge in the direction of Walkenried. When one of the two trailers went into the grass verge on the right for an unknown reason and the driver tried to reverse, she lost control of the car and trailer. The tow vehicle was eventually pulled out by the weight of the overridden trailer and overturned on its side.

From the side impact, the 5-year-old was thrown from the tractor and trapped under the driver’s cab. Here he suffered serious injuries. With the help of the volunteer fire brigades from Walkenried and Wieda, the trapped boy was freed and handed over to the rescue service. Accompanied by an emergency physician, the child was finally taken to UMG by rescue helicopter from Göttingen. His condition is currently stable. The 19-year-old driver was slightly injured and was able to free herself from the overturned tractor.

For the duration of the rescue work and the subsequent registration of the accident, L 603 was completely closed for a period of about 5 hours. Traffic has been diverted.

The tractor unit was confiscated by order of the acting public prosecutor at the Göttingen public prosecutor’s office. Investigations into the exact causes of the accident are ongoing.

Witnesses to the accident are asked to contact the Bad Lauterberg police on 05524/9630.
