VW ID.7: first data on the electric sedan (pictures)

With the ID.7, VW is launching an all-electric counterpart to the Passat this year. The company from Wolfsburg presented the first data about the model to the media. The design continues to be displayed in disguise. The new series will have its world premiere in just under two weeks.

ID.7 has a length of 4.96 meters. Thanks to the electric drive and a wheelbase of 2.96 meters, the cabin has the same spatial conditions as in the luxury class. The trunk under the door has a volume of 532 liters. The model is powered by a newly developed electric motor, a three-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine that produces 210 kW (286 hp) and up to 545 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and on to 180 km/h. Energy consumption is expected to be around 13 kWh.

In ID. 7, a newly developed drive is used for the first time, in which a trio of electric motors, a two-stage single-speed gearbox and a pulse-controlled inverter are designed to optimize efficiency. According to VW, the pulse-controlled inverter provides thermal stability, controls energy flow and optimizes consumption.

VW also highlights the electric sedan’s good aerodynamics, with a drag coefficient of around 0.23. According to the WLTP standard, the company from Wolfsburg promises between 615 and 700 kilometers of driving between two charging breaks for the two versions of the drive “Pro” and “Pro S”. For this purpose, energy accumulators are installed in the floor between the axles, which provide 77 kWh or 85 kWh of useful power, depending on the version. Fast charging can be done at a public charging station with a capacity of up to 200 kW.

Inside, the driver will find a 15-inch touchscreen that floats in front of the center console like a tablet. A head-up display, which projects all information into the driver’s field of vision, is also standard. The ambient lighting, which includes ten colors, is designed to create a good atmosphere in the ID.7. 30 colors are also available at an additional cost. VW is also highlighting a new, “smart” air conditioning system. Entertainment is provided by an optional Harman Kardon sound system with a capacity of 700 watts and 14 speakers. The atmosphere is complemented by new seats with ventilation and a massage function.

VW promises a base price “well below €60,000” for the ID.7. When exactly it will come to the first customers in Germany, Wolfsburg is left behind. A four-wheel-drive version of the ID.7 will also follow later, with a second, asynchronous electric motor in the front and an expected total output of 250 kW (340 hp). A wagon version is also expected in 2024.
